Balan - The Boy Movie Review :
Hi guys! Today, we’re reviewing the movie “Balan – The Boy.” Coming from Chidambaram, the director of Manjummel Boys, this film might look like an intense thriller based on its trailer. But in reality, it’s much more of a survival drama than a thriller.

So, let’s see how well this movie connects with the audience!

First, let’s talk about the story without any spoilers.

A mother and her son—whose real identities remain unknown—keep moving from one place to another, adopting new names and starting fresh lives each time.

Why are they constantly on the run? What happened in their past? Who are they trying to escape from? These are the film’s central questions.

Farzana Palathingal plays the mother, while Adhisheshan portrays young Balan and Muhammed Zinaan plays the teenage version of Balan.

The biggest highlight of this film is its storytelling.

Director Chidambaram doesn’t rely on unnecessary twists, loud moments, or excessive drama. Instead, he keeps the narrative simple and slow-paced, focusing primarily on the emotions of the characters.

The first half, in particular, is highly engaging. The bond between the mother and Balan, and the constant fear they live with, draw us completely into their world.

Even without much violence, every scene feels tense because we constantly worry that their past could catch up with them at any moment.

Farzana’s performance deserves special mention. She carries the entire film on her shoulders. Her expressions, body language, and emotional depth are all exceptional.

Adhisheshan, as young Balan, also delivers a very natural performance.

Coming to the technical aspects, the cinematography is absolutely stunning. Every frame feels realistic, and the background score perfectly complements the scenes.

That said, the film isn’t flawless.

Compared to the first half, the second half feels somewhat weaker. Once the story shifts to teenage Balan, the film’s tone changes significantly.

What initially feels like an emotional survival drama gradually moves into action-thriller territory.

This transition doesn’t feel entirely smooth. In particular, the emotional connection between Balan and Abbas could have been developed more strongly to create a greater impact.

The villain’s character also isn’t particularly memorable.

Still, overall, this is an honest attempt that stands apart from the usual commercial cinema formula and gives importance to emotions.

Viewers expecting a fast-paced mass entertainer may find the film a bit slow. However, those who enjoy character-driven dramas will definitely connect with it.

Overall, “Balan – The Boy” is an emotional drama that explores themes of survival, motherhood, and identity.

My rating: 3.5 out of 5.
