A movie being removed from an OTT platform within just 48 hours of its release is extremely rare. And when it's a film starring a popular actor like Diljit Dosanjh, everyone has the same question.

Why was Satluj banned? What problem did the government have with this movie?

First of all, Satluj is a film directed by Honey Trehan. It is essentially a biographical film based on the life of renowned human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra.

Coming to the story...

During the 1980s and 1990s, Punjab witnessed intense militancy. On one side were the Khalistan militants, and on the other were the Indian security forces. The conflict continued for years, resulting in the loss of thousands of lives.

During that period, Jaswant Singh Khalra began investigating allegations that thousands of unidentified bodies had been illegally cremated. Later, he himself disappeared. A few years afterward, it was proven in court that he had been kidnapped and murdered. Several Punjab Police officers were also convicted in connection with the case.

According to reports, the CBFC initially suggested around 21 cuts to the film. However, the number reportedly kept increasing and eventually reached 127 cuts, as director Honey Trehan stated in several interviews.

He also claimed that the board asked them to remove many references to real-life events and even suggested changing Jaswant Singh Khalra's name.

Reports further stated that the film did not present the Punjab militancy in a balanced manner. It was alleged that the actions of the militants were downplayed, while the actions of the security forces were given greater emphasis.

Based on these concerns, action was reportedly taken under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, citing issues related to the country's sovereignty, integrity, national security, and public order.

However, on the other hand...

The filmmakers and their supporters argue that this is fundamentally a human rights story, and portraying historical events is a part of freedom of expression.

Meanwhile, several Sikh organizations in Punjab have demanded that the ban be lifted. Some groups have even announced plans to organize public screenings of the film in certain areas.

As of now, ZEE5 has only stated that it is pursuing legal avenues to restore the film to the platform. However, no return date has been announced yet.

Overall, the Satluj controversy is not just about a movie being banned. It has once again sparked a nationwide debate on artistic freedom, national security, censorship, and the portrayal of historical events.
