reception
The sequel was not as commercially or critically successful as the original. While it was praised by some for retaining the light-hearted, slapstick charm of the first film, many critics found it to be a lesser imitation, feeling that the joke had worn thin and that it lacked the original's heart.
Plot Summary
This film also follows several interconnected storylines that eventually converge:
Xixo's Quest: The film begins again in the Kalahari. Xixo's (Nǃxau ǂToma) life is peaceful until his two young children, Xiri and Xisa, stow away on a poacher's truck that passes by their village. Unaware of the danger, they are carried away. Xixo sees the truck's tracks and, believing his children have been taken, sets off on a long journey to find and rescue them.
The Stranded 'Gods': Dr. Ann Taylor (Lena Farugia), a lawyer from New York City, and Dr. Stephen Marshall (Hans Strydom), a zoologist, are flying over the desert in a small ultralight aircraft. After flying into a storm, they crash and are left stranded in the middle of the wilderness. Their attempts to survive and find their way back to civilization provide much of the film's slapstick comedy, similar to the Andrew Steyn character from the first movie.
The Bumbling Soldiers: A separate subplot involves two soldiers from opposing armies—a Cuban (played by Erick Bowen) and an Angolan (played by Treasure Tshabalala)—who are lost in the desert. They repeatedly capture each other, with control of the single rifle passing back and forth in a series of comedic encounters.
These plots intersect as Xixo, in his search, encounters the two stranded "civilized" people and the bumbling soldiers. They all eventually cross paths with the poachers who have Xixo's children.
The film's modest success did, however, lead to several unofficial, Hong Kong-produced "sequels" (such as Crazy Safari and Crazy Hong Kong) that also starred Nǃxau ǂToma.
