Review :
"Back in the day, a Bollywood comedy would leave the entire theater echoing with laughter... but does that same 90s formula still work in 2026? Did Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, the latest and reportedly final film from David Dhawan, father of Varun Dhawan, truly entertain audiences? Or was it simply a test of their patience? Let's find out in this review."

The title Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai immediately gives the impression of a fun-filled family entertainer. With a popular cast featuring Varun Dhawan, Mrunal Thakur, and Pooja Hegde, expectations were naturally quite high.

Coming to the story...

Varun Dhawan plays Jas, a man who ends up marrying Bani while intoxicated at a wedding ceremony. Five years later, he decides that he wants to become a father. However, Bani chooses to focus on her career instead. Up to this point, the conflict feels fairly interesting.

But instead of handling this issue maturely, the film seems to portray Bani's career choice as the problem itself. This becomes the film's first major drawback.

Just two months after their separation, Jas moves to the UK, where he meets a woman named Preet. After a kiss during a Truth or Dare game, he suddenly falls in love with her. For someone who was supposedly heartbroken over his divorce, moving on this quickly doesn't feel believable.

And that's where the chaos truly begins.

Soon, Jas learns that Bani is pregnant. At the same time, it is revealed that Preet is also pregnant. Instead of handling the situation honestly, the protagonist resorts to lies, cover-ups, and misunderstandings. From that point onward, the film runs almost entirely on confusion-based comedy.

The problem is...
The confusion keeps increasing, but the comedy never really lands.

David Dhawan is a filmmaker who defined an era of Bollywood comedy. He gave audiences classics like Coolie No.1 and Hero No.1. Since this is being viewed as his farewell film, many viewers naturally have an emotional connection to it.

But here's the issue...

His trademark slapstick comedy style now feels outdated. What worked decades ago doesn't necessarily match modern audience tastes. Society's views on relationships, marriage, and career choices have evolved significantly, yet the film remains stuck in an old-school mindset.

There are a few scenes that manage to entertain. Some moments even generate laughs. But looking at the overall experience, the film feels exhausting more often than enjoyable. By the time the runtime ends, audiences may feel more relief than satisfaction.

Final Verdict...
If you enjoy loud comedies in the style of Judwaa 2, Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai may entertain you to some extent. However, if you're expecting fresh writing, smart comedy, and logical storytelling, you're likely to be disappointed.

My rating: 2.75 out of 5.
