29 is a 2026 Indian Tamil-language romantic drama film written and directed by Rathna Kumar, the film stars Vidhu and Preethi Asrani in the lead roles, alongside Mahendran, Avinash, Shenaz Fathima and Prem Kumar in important roles. It was jointly produced Karthik Subbaraj under his Stone Bench Creations headed by Kaarthekeyen Santhanam and Lokesh Kanagaraj under his G Squad banners respectively. 29 was theatrically released on 8 May 2026.

What happens when society judges you for not being settled by the age of 29? How deeply can a man break when the woman he loves walks away? And at the same time, how far can he go to fulfill his mother’s dreams?

The film 29 answers these questions through an emotional and relatable journey.

Story :

Vidhu plays Sathya, a middle-class village boy who grows up in a family that deeply loves nature, lakes, and rural life. After studying Agriculture, Sathya moves to Chennai and works as a software engineer.

There, he meets Viju, played by Preethi Asrani. Their friendship gradually blossoms into love. In the beginning, their relationship feels cute, natural, and realistic.

However, Viju has a major goal in life—she dreams of becoming an IAS officer. To achieve that dream, she quits her job and starts preparing for the exams.

This is where misunderstandings begin to creep into their relationship. As love stands on one side and ambition on the other, their bond slowly starts falling apart.

Did Viju eventually become an IAS officer? Did Sathya overcome his heartbreak? And do they reunite in the end? You'll have to watch the film to find out.

Movie Review :

29 is not just another love story. It is an emotional journey that explores the struggles of a middle-class man approaching the age of 29.

The first half focuses primarily on the love story. The chemistry between Vidhu and Preethi Asrani feels extremely natural. Their relationship never appears forced and instead resembles a real-life romance.
The film realistically portrays the small conversations, insecurities, expectations, and emotional complexities that exist in relationships.
However, since much of the narration is driven by the hero’s inner voice, the pacing feels a bit slow in certain portions.

The second half shifts completely into emotional territory.
The scenes where Sathya takes responsibility for fulfilling his mother’s dreams are particularly effective. Along with the love story, the mother-son sentiment emerges as one of the film’s strongest emotional pillars.

Vidhu deserves special appreciation for his performance. He delivers a mature and convincing act, especially in the heartbreak sequences where he connects strongly with the audience.

Preethi Asrani is equally convincing as an ambitious young woman willing to sacrifice aspects of her personal life to achieve her goals.

Technical Aspects :

The cinematography is visually appealing. The village landscapes, lake sequences, and nature-filled backdrops are beautifully captured.
The background score effectively enhances the emotional scenes. The songs, however, feel average.
The editing could have been sharper, as a few scenes feel unnecessarily prolonged.

That said, some viewers may be disappointed with the climax because the ending is left largely open to interpretation rather than being fully explained.

Final Verdict :

29 is not a commercial entertainer designed for mass audiences. Instead, it is a realistic emotional drama that explores heartbreak, ambitions, family values, and self-discovery.
Men in their late twenties, in particular, may find the film highly relatable.
If you enjoy slow-paced emotional love stories, 29 is worth giving a try on Netflix.
