Because of Goddess Lakshmi’s curse, Lord Jagannath and Balram lost all their food and treasure.
Wherever they begged for alms, the food in that house would mysteriously vanish—so people stopped offering them anything. For 12 long years, the divine brothers wandered hungry from door to door.

One day, they noticed a group of people returning happily after receiving food from a donor’s house in the Chandala community. Hoping to finally eat something, they walked toward that direction. The house owner welcomed them warmly.
But Balram refused to eat food cooked by a Chandala and asked for raw ingredients instead—so he could cook for himself.
