एक घने जंगल में एक चालाक भेड़िया रहता था। वह हमेशा शिकार की तलाश में रहता था, लेकिन कई दिनों से उसे कुछ भी खाने को नहीं मिला था।
एक दिन उसे एक छोटी बकरी नदी के किनारे पानी पीते हुए दिखाई दी। भेड़िये के मुँह में पानी आ गया और उसने सोचा, “आज तो दावत पक्की है!”
वह धीरे-धीरे बकरी के पास गया और बोला,
“अरे बकरी! तुम मेरा पानी गंदा क्यों कर रही हो?”
बकरी ने शांति से जवाब दिया,
“लेकिन मैं तो नीचे खड़ी हूँ, आपका पानी कैसे गंदा कर सकती हूँ?”
भेड़िया थोड़ा घबरा गया, लेकिन फिर बोला,
“तुमने पिछले साल मुझे गाली दी थी!”
बकरी मुस्कुराई और बोली,
“मैं तो अभी एक साल की भी नहीं हूँ, मैंने आपको कैसे गाली दी होगी?”
अब भेड़िये के पास कोई जवाब नहीं था, लेकिन वह फिर भी बहाना बनाकर बकरी को खाना चाहता था।
तभी बकरी ने चालाकी से कहा,
“ठीक है, अगर आपको मुझे खाना ही है, तो पहले भगवान का नाम लेकर प्रार्थना कर लो।”
भेड़िया जैसे ही आँखें बंद करके प्रार्थना करने लगा, बकरी तेजी से भाग गई और अपनी जान बचा ली।
जब भेड़िये ने आँखें खोलीं, तब तक बकरी दूर जा चुकी थी।
वह खुद पर गुस्सा करने लगा और समझ गया कि चालाकी हमेशा काम नहीं आती।
