शेखचिल्ली अपनी मासूम हरकतों और अजीब-गरीब सोच के लिए मशहूर था। एक दिन उसने तय किया कि वह गाँव वालों के सामने अपनी “चालाकी” दिखाएगा। उसने सोचा–
“आज ऐसी ट्रिक चलाऊँगा कि सब दंग रह जाएँगे!”


वह बाजार गया और एक रस्सी लेकर पेड़ पर चढ़ गया। नीचे से लोग चिल्लाए—
“शेखचिल्ली! क्या कर रहे हो?”
शेखचिल्ली बोला—
“मैं बादलों को बाँधकर बारिश रोकने जा रहा हूँ!”


सब हँसने लगे लेकिन शेखचिल्ली को लगा कि उसकी ‘चाल’ सही चल रही है। उसने रस्सी को हवा में फेंका और जोर-जोर से खींचने लगा, जैसे बादलों को पकड़ लिया हो।


कुछ देर बाद हवा चली और रस्सी उसके हाथ से छूटकर नीचे गिर गई। शेखचिल्ली बोला—
“देखा! बादल मेरी पकड़ से डरकर भाग गए!”


गाँव वाले पेट पकड़-पकड़कर हँसने लगे। सभी ने कहा—
“शेखचिल्ली की चाल वाकई चल गई… वो भी उलटी!”


यह सुनकर शेखचिल्ली गर्व से हँसते हुए बोला—
“मैं हूँ ही इतना चालाक!”


और इसी तरह शेखचिल्ली की यह ‘चाल गई’ कहानी गाँव में मशहूर हो गई।
