Is he a Robin Hood... or just a criminal?
Blending emotion, a heist thriller, and social commentary, Dhanush's "Kara" attempts to answer these questions.
So, is this film truly worth watching, or does it end up being just another routine revenge drama? Let's find out.
Story :
Karaswamy, a thief, falls in love with Malli and decides to leave his criminal life behind after marrying her. Together, they dream of running a small hotel and living a peaceful life. However, to raise the money needed for this new beginning, he must return to his hometown and meet his father after many years. A series of events there changes his life forever. After losing his father, Karaswamy returns to his old ways and begins targeting banks one after another.
But why is he robbing banks?
What is the real motive behind these robberies?
That forms the central plot of the film.
How is the movie?
Director Vignesh Raja doesn't treat this as just another heist thriller. Instead, he tries to ground the story in the emotional bond between a father and son. To be honest, that's also the film's biggest strength.
The father-son scenes in the first half feel natural and emotionally effective. The chemistry between Dhanush and K.S. Ravikumar works exceptionally well.
The way the film incorporates farmers' issues through the backdrop of the 1991 Gulf War is also quite interesting.
The first half remains engaging throughout. The hero's backstory, family emotions, village portions, and the setup for the bank robberies all draw the audience into the narrative. The bank robbery sequence near the interval is genuinely gripping.
The problems begin in the second half.
After such a strong emotional setup, you expect the screenplay to become more intense. Unfortunately, that's where the film loses some momentum.
DSP Bharathan's investigation track isn't particularly exciting, and several episodes involving the villain fail to leave the impact you would expect.
The tension and unpredictability essential to a heist thriller are missing in certain portions.
That said, the film never completely loses its footing.
From the pre-climax onward, it regains momentum. The series of robberies carried out by the hero, the revelation of the real reason behind them, and the emotional payoff in the climax work quite well.
Final Verdict :
Kara doesn't tell a completely new story.
However, it presents a familiar narrative with strong emotions, solid performances, and an engaging first half.
Had the second half been stronger, this could have become a truly memorable film.
Even so, fans of Dhanush, lovers of emotional dramas, and viewers looking for a heist thriller should definitely give it a try.
My Rating: 3.25/5
Kara is remembered less as a story about a bank robber and more as a moving tale of the bond between a father and son that steals your heart.

Review :
Mollywood Times revolves around Vineeth Madhavan, an aspiring filmmaker. Ever since childhood, cinema has been his greatest passion. He dreams of making an unforgettable film. However, every step he takes toward achieving that dream is met with compromises, ego clashes, fake friendships, and industry politics.
The first half of the film is highly engaging. The way Vineeth’s character is established works particularly well. The film realistically portrays the dreams, obsession, and sacrifices that aspiring directors are willing to make for cinema.
Naslen deserves special mention for his performance. The entire film rests on his shoulders. Vineeth begins as an innocent dreamer, but gradually transforms into a cynical individual consumed by frustration, anger, and disappointment. Naslen portrays this transformation convincingly.
Director Abhinav Sunder Nayak’s writing also reflects a great deal of honesty. Several scenes exposing the darker side of the film industry leave a strong impact. The sequence explaining why producers continue investing in flop films, moments highlighting insider politics, and the humiliations faced by aspiring filmmakers are all sharply written.
The film also effectively showcases Vineeth’s passion for cinema. His ambition to become a horror filmmaker capable of creating genuine fear among audiences is particularly interesting.
However, the film is far from perfect.
Another issue lies in Vineeth’s character writing. The film consistently presents him as a lone warrior, while almost everyone around him is portrayed as selfish, fake, or incompetent. As a result, instead of becoming more relatable, he occasionally comes across as someone with a superiority complex.
The film also introduces an idea that questions the success of filmmakers from underprivileged backgrounds. This theme does not fully align with the story and feels somewhat unnecessary, potentially creating controversy without adding much value.
From a technical standpoint, the editing is brilliant in certain sections. The voice-over narration is reminiscent of Mukundan Unni Associates. However, unlike that film, it does not work consistently throughout.
The background score is decent, and the cinematography complements the film’s mood effectively. Unfortunately, the weaker writing in the climax reduces the emotional impact.
So, what’s the final verdict?
Mollywood Times is not a love letter to cinema—it is a hate letter to the film industry.
The anger feels genuine. The frustration feels genuine. Many of its observations about industry politics are believable and grounded in reality.
At the same time, the director repeatedly emphasizes the same message, causing the narrative to drag unnecessarily. With a tighter screenplay and a stronger climax, this could have been a far more powerful film.
Even so, if you enjoy films that explore the darker side of the movie industry in a raw and unapologetic manner, *Mollywood Times* is an interesting watch.
As for my rating: 3.25 / 5
This may not be a film that appeals to everyone, but it is certainly one that will spark discussion.
