According to Hindu mythology, this mystery is connected to the curse of Chandra Dev. Chandra Dev married the 27 daughters of Daksha Prajapati, who represent the 27 Nakshatras. However, he loved Rohini the most, which made the other wives unhappy.
When they complained to their father, Daksha Prajapati became furious and cursed Chandra Dev, causing his brightness to slowly fade away. Worried and helpless, Chandra Dev prayed to Lord Shiva and performed intense penance.
Lord Shiva blessed him and partially lifted the curse. Because of this, the Moon decreases and increases every month, and Shiva placed the crescent moon on his head.
