It was invented in 1945 by scientists John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
The computer used about 18,000 vacuum tubes and filled an entire room. It weighed around 30 tons and could perform thousands of calculations per second.
Today, even a small smartphone is far more powerful than that first computer.
