शरीर जड़ यंत्र है और चेतना (आत्मा) वह बिजली है जिससे यह यंत्र सक्रिय होता है।
तो फिर भोगता कौन है?
जन्म-मरण, सुख-दुख और पाप-पुण्य का भोग न तो शुद्ध चेतना करती है और न ही मृत शरीर। इसे भोगता है 'अहंकार' (Ego)।
जब चेतना स्वयं को इस शरीर और मन के साथ जोड़ लेती है (तादात्म्य कर लेती है), तो एक मिथ्या सत्ता पैदा होती है जिसे हम 'मैं' (अहंकार) कहते हैं।
यह 'मैं' ही कहता है—मैंने खाया, मैं दुखी हूँ, मैंने पाप किया।
चेतना केवल शक्ति देती है, लेकिन भोगता वह 'अहंकार' है जो स्वयं को शरीर मान बैठा है।
