शेर को जंगल का राजा कहा जाता है। शेर आमतौर पर परिवार के रूप में रहते हैं, जिसे प्राइड (Pride) कहा जाता है। एक शेर परिवार में सामान्यतः 1–2 नर शेर, कई शेरनियाँ और उनके बच्चे (शावक) होते हैं।
शेरनियाँ मिलकर शिकार करती हैं और पूरे परिवार के लिए भोजन लाती हैं। नर शेर का मुख्य काम अपने क्षेत्र और परिवार की सुरक्षा करना होता है। शेर के बच्चे अपनी माँ और पूरे समूह के साथ रहते हैं और धीरे-धीरे शिकार करना सीखते हैं।
शेर का परिवार मुख्य रूप से अफ्रीका के घास के मैदानों में पाया जाता है। उनका सामाजिक जीवन और आपसी सहयोग उन्हें अन्य बड़े बिल्लियों से अलग बनाता है।
