बाल हनुमान बचपन में बहुत चंचल और शक्तिशाली थे।
एक दिन उन्होंने उगते हुए सूर्यदेव को लाल फल समझ लिया और आकाश में छलांग लगा दी।

देवताओं को भय हुआ कि अगर सूर्य निगल लिया गया तो पूरी सृष्टि अंधकार में डूब जाएगी।
तब देवराज इंद्रदेव ने वज्र फेंका जो हनुमान की हनु (ठोड़ी) पर लगा।

तभी से उनका नाम पड़ा — हनुमान।
