⁣गांव के किनारे एक पुराना कुआं था।
इतना पुराना कि किसी को याद नहीं था—वो कब बना, किसने बनाया। बस इतना पता था कि सूरज ढलते ही उधर कोई नहीं जाता।
कहा जाता था,
रात के सन्नाटे में कुएं से पानी गिरने की आवाज़ आती है…
छप… छप…
जबकि कुएं में अब पानी ही नहीं था।
एक दिन रमेश, जो शहर से लौटा था, हँस पड़ा।
“अंधविश्वास है,” कहकर वो टॉर्च लेकर कुएं के पास चला गया।
कुएं की मुंडेर पर झुककर उसने नीचे झांका—
अंधेरा… गहरा… अंतहीन।
तभी किसी ने बहुत धीमी आवाज़ में कहा—
“प्यास लगी है…”
रमेश चौंक गया।
पीछे मुड़ा—कोई नहीं।
फिर वही आवाज़, इस बार और पास—
“तूने मुझे देखा… अब मैं तुझे देखूँगी।”
अचानक टॉर्च की रोशनी बुझ गई।
कुएं से ठंडी हवा का झोंका आया और किसी गीले हाथ ने उसका टखना पकड़ लिया।
अगली सुबह गांव वालों को रमेश नहीं मिला।
बस कुएं की मुंडेर पर उसके जूते पड़े थे…
और अंदर से आ रही थी एक नई आवाज़—
