Most unique festival of India in the Kinnaur valley of Himalayas. Experiencing Raulane in Kalpa felt like stepping into a story thousands of years old story. Masked dances, sacred rituals and devotional celebration. This ancient, winter-to-spring ritual honors celestial fairies known as Saunis, who are believed to protect the villagers from harsh winters. Celebration involves a sacred wedding sacred between men representing the Raula (groom) and Raulane (bride), they dance through for 5 days to bid farewell to fairies by traditional masked dances and meditative dance. Standing there, watching the sacred union of Raula and Raulane unfold, it didn’t feel like a performance… it felt like stepping into something ancient, something alive.
